Mazatlan, Sinaloa.- Given the high rate of theft of iron covers in Jumapam sewers and CFE records, both units replace this material with polyethylene that apparently have the same resistance and much lower cost.

Both the Municipal Board of Drinking Water and Sewerage of Mazatlan (Jumapam) and CFE, assured that this beginning of the year have recorded significant losses due to the theft of iron covers and are already working on replacing them.

The Superintendent of CFE in the South Zone of Sinaloa, Leopoldo Rodríguez Soto, affirmed that the parastatal lost last year about 200 thousand pesos for theft of covers of its records, that is why it is contemplated to replace around 10 thousand tapas in Mazatlan.

“But that’s not all, the most delicate thing is that when the covers are stripped the register becomes a trap for pedestrians and, if someone falls there, they can be deadly because they cross high-voltage cables below”, he warned.

Another situation that occurs in Mazatlán is that three days ago, employees of the same Agua Potable unit were detained by the Municipal Police, accused of stealing and selling iron covers that stripped sewers of the sanitary sewer.

When exposing their material in the National Congress of Civil Engineering in this port, the polyethylene suppliers assured that the delinquents will no longer steal the covers of said registers to sell them for “old iron” in the yards.

“The Jumapam already bought us an important supply of polyethylene lids, which has a cost of approximately 1,300 plus VAT and have a strength and utility similar to that of iron.

“That is to say, they can be installed in streets and avenues where heavy or loaded trucks pass and there is no risk of anything,” explained Edgar Alejandro and Luis Román Díaz Villa, representatives of the polyethylene supplier company in Guadalajara, Jalisco.
